Crowd waits for the execution of Eugene Weidmann on June 17, 1939, in Versailles, outside the prison Saint-Pierre. He is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death and becomes the last man to be guillotined in public. The ‘hysterical behavior’ by spectators is so scandalous that French President Albert Lebrun immediately bannes all future public executions. Executions by guillotine in France continued in private until September 10, 1977
